Esso si trova nel nord est della Sicilia, a 15° di logitudine est da Greenwich e 37° e 47′ di latitudine nord dall’equatore. Presenta un altezza di circa 3.330 m. s.l.m. anche se essa varia nel tempo in funzione delle sue eruzioni che ne determinano l’innalzamento o l’abbassamento. Si estende per 47 Km da Nord a Sud e per 38 Km da Est ad Ovest, con una superficie complessiva di 1220 Km2. Con le diverse eruzioni ad esso connesse ha modificato incessantemente il paesaggio, minacciando spesso le diverse comunità umane che nei millenni si sono insediate intorno ad esso. La sua superficie è caratterizzata da una ricca varietà di ambienti che alterna paesaggi urbani, folti boschi che Etna Patrimonio Unesco conservano diverse specie botaniche endemiche ad aree desolate ricoperte da roccia vulcanica e periodicamente soggette ad innevamento alle maggiori quote.
