Nicolosi (Catania), situated on the southern slope of the highest active volcano in Europe, is tradionally called the "Gate of Etna" due to its strategic location which makes it a privileged entry point to the volcano. Its territory extends from an altitude of about 670 meter up to the top of the central crater at 3,300 meters above sea level, largely within the Etna Park. Thanks to the mild climate and healthy air, Nicolosi is now a wonderful holiday destination and an ideal tourist destination for those looking for a unique and unforgettable experience. Etna is the largest and highest volcano in Europe and, thanks to the eruptions of recent years, also one of the busiest in the world. A natural heritage of inestimable value that, in 21 June 2013, has received official recognition by Unesco as "World Heritage". Visiting to Etna is therefore a must for anyone passes from Sicily. At an altitude of 1910 m. above sea level, in the territory of Nicolosi, is located the station tourist - sports called "Nicolosi North" (Etna South) also known as Rifugio Sapienza where there are tourist services such as hotels, commercial excercises and restaurant and where, in the winter, you can enjoy various winter sports such as downhill skiing or snowboarding thanks to various means of ascent present (cable car, chair lift, ski lifts). Through the means of the cable car you can reach the summit craters at 3,000 meters altitude where a moon scenary appears in the eyes of the tourist. The Rifugio Sapienza is the starting point for several guided tours.

The town of Nicolosi has a rich and colorful artistic and architectural heritage mainly of religious origin. The town is brimming with altars which recall the events related to the troubled relationship with the Volcano. Historical peculiarity presents the Monastery of San Nicolà The Rena, ancient seat of the abbey, from which derives the name of the town. In Nicolosi is located the Volcanological Museum of Etna that collects the remains of lava material coming from the volcano and the Museum of Farming where you can see the traditional customs and objects of the old peasant life of Etna's citizens...




The Mount Etna has a magical landscape that deserves to be discovered. Inside the Etna Park you can find different types of routes: nature trails tracked from forester, trails for hiking in the woods and trails at high altitude. Nicolosi is the ideal starting point for the excursions on the highest volcano in Europe. From the town of Nicolosi is easy to reach the station tourist - sports Nicolosi North where we can admire the Silvestri Craters or we can undertake a fascinating excursion with the Etna cable car leading up to 2500 meters of altitude...

The Etna Park is created to protect a unique environmental heritage and the wonderful landscape surrounding to the Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe. Established by the Decree of the President of the Region of 17 March 1987, was the first park to be created in Sicily. Its territory falls well within 20 municipalities in the province of Catania: Adrano, Belpasso, Biancavilla, Bronte, Castiglione di Sicilia, Giarre, Linguaglossa, Maletto, Milo, Nicolosi, Pedara, Piedimonte Etneo...   



There are many events that take place throughout the year in Nicolosi. In the summer, do not miss the event "Stars and Lapilli" , rich of cultural events of all kinds ( theater, music, film, art, sport). During the Christmas season is held the event "Snow and Lapilli" eventful and popular traditions. The first Sunday of July, there is the unmisseble appointment with traditional and heartfelt celebration in honor of Saint Anthony the Abbot, Patron and Protector of the country while the second Sunday of August there is the feast of the patron saint , St. Anthony of Padua. 


Nicolosi is rich in structures able to meet various needs of tourists. In recent years, the tourism offer has developed continuously following the needs of tourists and travelers from all over the world. In addition to hotels, there are over 40 Bed and Breakfast and holiday home scattered throughout the area. In addition, several accommodation facilities are present in the area of Nicolosi North near the tourist-sports station called "Etna Sud - Rifugio Sapienza". For camping lovers, there is the wide "Camping Etna "  which is located just north of the center of Nicolosi.
